We encourage all participants of CALP-5 to secure their plane tickets and accommodation in Tromsø as soon as possible. In recent years, Tromsø has been experiencing a significant tourist boom, and March 2026 falls within a particularly busy period for tourism. Hotel prices may be higher than usual.
You can travel to Tromsø by plane, bus, or car, but there is no railway connection to the city.
Tromsø has an international airport, Langnes, that has recently been expanded and offers many direct flights connecting Tromsø to Berlin, Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Vienna, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Gdańsk, and other cities. Tromsø is well-connected to other Norwegian cities, there are direct flights from Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim.
A. STAYING IN A HOTEL
Most hotels in Tromsø are located in the Tromsø city center. This area is also home to most restaurants, cafés, museums, souvenir shops, and grocery stores, and it offers scenic views of the mountains and the large bridge across the Tromsø Sound.
From the city center, you can take a bus to the university campus (called Breivika), where the conference venue is located. There are plenty of buses and several routes that go from the center to the campus (get off at the stop "UiT"). The bus ride takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Detailed information about buses can be found below.
Here is a list of nice hotels in the Tromsø city center:
Closer to the conference venue, there are two additional accommodation options: the university guesthouse (see below) and the Penguin Hotel, which is the Patient Hotel primarily intended for hospital patients and their relatives, who travel to Tromsø from other parts of Northern Norway. This hotel is part of the University Hospital of North Norway. The Penguin Hotel is located one bus stop away from the campus and is also within walking distance from the conference venue (approximately a 10-minute walk). The price per room here is not lower than the hotels in the city center. There are no grocery stores in the vicinity. If you choose to stay at this hotel, please note that you will encounter many patients, and the hotel entrance is located within the hospital. Since the purpose of the hotel is to accommodate hospital patients, we do not recommend staying there.
B. STAYING AT UNIVERSITY GUESTHOUSE ON CAMPUS - FULLY BOOKED
There is a university guesthouse located right on campus, just a 5-minute walk from the conference venue. We have pre-booked the 19 available rooms, so those interested in this type of accommodation should contact the organizing committee (Anna Endresen, anna.endresen@uit.no) directly, NOT the guesthouse. Since the number of rooms is limited, we encourage those who would like to use this option to contact Anna Endresen as soon as possible. Rooms will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
In the guesthouse (Breiviklia 13, Tromsø), each room accommodates one person, but the bathroom and kitchen are shared with the neighboring room. The standard is relatively simple (see the pictures in a file attached at the bottom of this page). There is no breakfast served, but the guests can prepare their own breakfast. However, the accommodation is comfortable enough, and many renowned linguists have stayed there over the years. Otherwise, the guesthouse primarily accommodates university guests, short-term visiting researchers, and PhD students.
The cost is 400 NOK per night, but one can book a room ONLY for the entire week (March 2–8) at a total cost of 2,800 NOK (Norwegian Kroner).
Additional Information:
The Tromsø airport Langnes is located 3 km from downtown (a 10-minute drive by bus or car). To get to the city center, you can take the Airport Express bus, a city bus, or a taxi.
You can take one of the following busses:
We recommend taking either bus 26 or 40, as these are the fastest options to reach the Tromsø city center. Bus 42 takes longer due to the tunnel being closed.
There are several options for purchasing a bus ticket:
Mobile App: The easiest way is to buy a bus ticket using the "Svipper" app. Download Svipper for Android or iPhone. A single bus ticket in Tromsø costs 48 NOK, but if you travel outside rush hours, you can get it for 26 NOK (this applies to weekdays from 9:00 AM–2:00 PM and 5:00 PM–1:00 AM). You need a ticket for one zone (Tromsø). A single-zone ticket is valid for 60 minutes from the time you activate it.
Ticket Machines: You can also buy tickets from ticket machines. There is a ticket machine at the bus stop near the airport, where you can pay with a bank card.
UiT The Arctic University of Norway is the only university in Tromsø. To get to its campus (Breivika) you can take one of the following busses:
