Tromsø is the largest city in Northern Norway with a little under 80 000 inhabitants, located about 350 km north of the arctic circle. April is the time of year when:

  • the days get longer, and we will gain about 9 minutes of light daily across the period of the course: the sun will be up from 05:21 to 20:14 on the 7th, and from 04:47 to 20:44 on the 14th
  • there is a lot of snow, about 100cm: combined with the extended daylight hours, it is a premium skiing period

The UiT campus is located on the island of Tromsøya, about 4km north of the city center. To navigate the campus, we use Mazemap, which has access to all buildings, floors, and rooms across the campus.

The easiest way to get around in Tromsø is by bus, which is run by the Svipper company: we highly recommend for you to download the Svipper app, from which you can buy tickets as well as check bus routes and timetables. Ways to buy bus tickets are listed here. A 7-day ticket will set you off about 350 NOK, while a single ticket costs about 50 NOK (prices for 2025) for zone 1. For comparison, a taxi ride will cost you several hundred NOK.
