The Strait of Hormuz as a Global Chokepoint: Geopolitical Implications for African Economies, Energy Security, Trade and Foreign Policy
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important strategic chokepoints, linking the global energy system to wider questions of trade, security and geopolitics. What happens there does not remain confined to the Gulf since the disruptions can have far-reaching consequences for economies and states well beyond the immediate region.
In this guest ecture, Prof. Ivan Henrico of Stellenbosch University will examine the geopolitical implications of the Strait of Hormuz from an African perspective, focusing on its significance for economies, energy security, trade and foreign policy.
Henrico is Vice-Dean for Research and Internationalisation and Associate Professor in Military Geography at Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Military Science. His interdisciplinary expertise spans geosciences, geoinformatics, military geography and geopolitics, complemented by more than a decade of experience as a geospatial scientist in the South African National Defence Force.
The lecture is organised by the Centre for Geopolitics, Peace and Security in collaboration with GLOBSEC, the UiT–Stellenbosch University partnership on societal security education and research.
