Can heart problems be detected before people feel ill? This study shows how advanced heart ultrasound may help answer that question. Using data from community-based studies in two countries, the movement of the heart muscle and left atrium during the cardiac cycle was examined. A structured way to detect technical errors was also developed, making the measurements more reliable. The work provides normal values for these newer ultrasound measures and shows that high blood pressure and increased levels of a blood marker linked to strain on the heart are associated with subtle abnormalities even in the general population. This may strengthen early diagnosis and make heart care more precise and preventive.
