Do you have a publishing strategy, or are you simply trying to get your next paper published? As part of its Mentorship Program, the Center for Language, Brain & Learning (C-LaBL) is organizing a workshop on publishing for PhD and Postdocs at the HSL Faculty.
How do you decide where to publish? What makes one journal more valuable for your career than another? Who decides whether your article gets published, and what happens behind the scenes after you click “submit”? What do impact factors really tell us? What is open access and why does it matter? Who pays for academic publishing, and where does all that money go? And perhaps most importantly: how can you make publishing work for you and the research career you want to build?
Publishing is one of the most important parts of academic life, but researchers receive surprisingly little training in how the publishing system actually works. We learn how to conduct research and write articles, but much less about the institutions, incentives and business models that determine how our work circulates, how it is evaluated and who gets to read it.
Publishing Unlocked is a four-hour interactive workshop designed to change that.
We will look behind the journal article at the system surrounding it: publishers and editors, peer review, journal hierarchies and prestige, impact factors and research assessment, open access and publishing economics. We will ask why the system works the way it does, how it is changing, and what those changes mean for researchers at the beginning of their careers.
But this is not simply a workshop about academic publishing. It is about your choices within it. You will have the opportunity to examine your own publishing practices and ambitions, discuss real dilemmas with other researchers, and begin developing a more deliberate strategy for where, why and how you publish.
The goal is simple: to give you greater publishing literacy and thereby greater agency over your research career.
The workshop will be run by Professor Curt Rice. He is Director of cOAlition S, an international consortium of research funding and performing organisations working to advance open access to research. He was the founding director of CASTL, a Norwegian Centre of Excellence at UiT, and later served as UiT’s Pro-Rector for Research. He has been the Rector of OsloMet and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.
The workshop will take place on October 30 at the UiT campus in Breivika from 11:00-15:00, and it is for PhDs and postdocs/researchers across all disciplines at HSL. Lunch will be covered for registered attendees.
