Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:
This thesis examines how people who have or have had cancer use Traditional and Complementary Medicine. The study is based on surveys among cancer survivors in Tromsø and linkage to data from the Cancer Registry of Norway. I investigated who uses such treatments, how they use conventional healthcare services, and how this relates to the official lifestyle recommendations.
The results show that many cancer survivors combine Traditional and Complementary Medicine with regular follow-up in the healthcare system, rather than replacing it. The use appears to be more related to how people experience their own health than to how severe their illness is or was. The findings also show that different groups using Traditional and Complementary Medicine have different health behaviors. This knowledge can contribute to better dialogue between cancer survivors and healthcare professionals and to more holistic follow-up of people living with and after cancer.
