"Immunterapi ved lungekreft: historikk, dagens status og fremtidsutsikter"

Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:

Lung cancer is the leading cause for cancer-related deaths worldwide, accounting for roughly one in five cancer deaths. This PhD project analyzed certain biomarkers in tumor tissue for predicting survival, to understand more of who is at higher risk and who may need closer follow-up, additional or more tailored treatment.
We analyzed tumor samples from a large group of patients from Northern Norway who had non-small cell lung cancer (the most common type) removed by surgery. Using special laboratory staining techniques, we made small RNA molecules and immune cells visible in the tissue. We then used digital microscopy and machine-learning software to count these biomarkers. The counts of biomarkers were then analyzed together with survival data from the patients.
The RNA markers (miR-17-5p and miR-20a-5p) showed mixed results, suggesting they are not reliable on their own. In contrast, certain “fighter” T cells (CD8 cells with the TCF1 marker) were associated with better outcomes. Another CD8 subset (CD57+ cells) may also be relevant, but all markers need further validation before routine clinical use.
