Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:
Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in cardiovascular health have been studied for decades. However, for individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia, the knowledge is limited. Additional therapies are needed as this population has an increased risk of cardiovascular disease despite statin treatment.
This thesis is based on a clinical trial conducted at Nordland Hospital in Bodø, Norway. It examines the effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements on different aspects of atherosclerosis development in a population with familial hypercholesterolemia.
We found no effect from omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements on endothelial function or inflammatory markers. Still, reductions in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels were observed. Based on our findings, routine recommendation of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements for individuals with FH is not warranted.
