Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis:
The liver is the body’s largest internal organ and plays a vital role in keeping us healthy. It has special liver cells, the liver sinusoidal endothelial cells, that clean the blood. Those cells have tiny holes for blood filtration and pick up and eat unwanted materials from the blood.
In this project, we show how everyday substances such as caffeine and cholesterol affect those cells and their work. We wanted to understand what helps and what harms them.
We used powerful microscopes to look at the surface and the skeleton of the cell and other methods to check if they are still alive and eating the things they like.
We found that caffeine, which can be found in coffee and tea, can help those liver cells by increasing the number of tiny holes. On the other hand, damaged cholesterol and other stress-related molecules can harm those cells and thus affect their cleaning ability. However, a substance called NAC (n-acetyl cysteine) can possibly reduce this damage.
In short, some everyday substances can have good (or bad) effects on those liver cells and sometimes the good ones can even help to protect the liver and keep it healthy.
