The research groups CRAFT and ENCODE invite you to Stanley Kubrick's science fiction movie A Clockwork Orange (UK & USA 1971) at Verdensteatret Cinematek on Tuesday November 11 from 17:30.

In a futuristic Britain, the urban youth have broken every restraint of polite society and taken on the role of ultraviolent thugs. Alex DeLarge leads a gang of such boys, his 'droogies', in nighttime sprees of senseless assault on vulnerable person who falls in their path. Alex is arrested after killing a woman and then subjected to the 'Ludovico Technique', a form of psychic conditioning that makes him unable to stand the thought of violence at all. Presenting us with a villain like Alex, the film asks us to consider the role of technology in punishment and correction, and its effectiveness. How should the state treat someone like Alex? How should we?

A Clockwork Orange is one of Kubrick's most controversial and divisive films. Alex and his gang dress in strange fashion and speak a hard-to-follow creole of British cockney and Slavic slang. The violence is shocking. Viewers should be advised that sexual assault plays a major role in this film. Yet it remains one of the most bleakly iconic future visions of the 20th century.

The film is based on a novel by Anthony Burgess, following the plot closely except for the ending.

The screening is hosted by our partners Verdensteatret Cinematek. Cornel Borit of the UiT library will give an introduction before the film. There will be a discussion after the screening.

Film is shown in English without subtitles.
