Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:
The thesis discusses the top-down Norwegian High North Strategy development from 2006 through a bottom-up study approach – large-scale scenarios have been addressed first and foremost from a small-scale Norwegian-Russian borderland context. The investigation has been based on long-term participant observation and a multimodal “studying through” method by considering the manifestations of the High North discourse in the Barents Euro-Arctic Region, mainly by centralizing the study object on the borderland areas such as the border towns of Kirkenes, in Norway, and Pechenga (Nikel and Zapolyarny) in Russia. The geostrategic bordering process of “NOIG” and “SCIN” forms the “North/South paradox” which is this thesis’ ideal type. This thesis argues that the workings of the North/South paradox have been instrumental to Norway, in terms of how the country has been able to negotiate its interests in relation to an increasingly complex post-Cold War and global Arctic reality, but even more so in relation to its complex neighbor Russia.
