Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag

The thesis focuses on how Norwegian public libraries and BUA outlets contribute to sustainable development and sharing. It presents three articles addressing the organisation of lending services, sharing initiatives, and public events, providing insight into how these actors engage citizens in sustainable practices.

In light of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the thesis explores how the public library’s model of sharing provides an alternative to linear consumption. It highlights how libraries promote sustainability and share materials through initiatives often developed in collaboration with civil society organisations. BUA partner with many libraries, organising outlets in collaboration with NGOs to extend the library model of sharing to outdoor sports and leisure equipment. The findings provide insight into how libraries and BUA outlets address sustainability goals and their potential impact on private consumption. The thesis establishes how the actors involved co-produce sustainable practices, provide equal access to outdoor activities, and raise awareness about sustainability issues through a variety of public events and initiatives. As these diverse lending services have emerged across Norwegian municipalities, the discussion considers whether they constitute an infrastructure for sustainable sharing.

The thesis provides its main theoretical contribution to social practice theory. It elaborates on this paradigm and considers how perspectives informing the articles may contribute to the analysis of practices. In dialogue with transitions research, it addresses upscaling and offers a framework for how sustainable practices spread. The thesis further contributes to a scholarly debate on democratic librarianship through its analysis of Norwegian libraries’ engagement with the SDGs. Fieldwork was conducted at four public libraries and two BUA outlets, resulting in three case studies based primarily on qualitative interviews and participant observation.
