Mattin is an artist, musician and theorist from Bilbao, based in Berlin, working conceptually with noise and improvisation. Through his practice, writing and pedagogy, he explores performative forms of estrangement as ways of engaging with structural alienation.
His work has been presented internationally in contexts including documenta 14 (Athens and Kassel), Performa (New York), the Shanghai Biennale, No Fun Fest (New York), CTM (Berlin), Arika (Glasgow) and Sonic Protest (Paris). He has lectured and taught at institutions including the Dutch Art Institute, CalArts, Bard College, Paris 8, Princeton University and Goldsmiths, University of London.
In 2017, Mattin completed a PhD at the University of the Basque Country under the supervision of philosopher Ray Brassier. His publications include Social Dissonance (Urbanomic, 2022), Unconstituted Praxis (CAC Brétigny/Tuamaturgia, 2012), and Noise & Capitalism (Kritika/Arteleku, 2009), co-edited with Anthony Iles. In 2026, Mattin and Iles co-edited Abolishing Capitalist Totality: What Is To Be Done Under Real Subsumption? (Minor Compositions).
Mattin has released more than 100 recordings and has been involved in projects including Billy Bao, Regler and Al Karpenter. Since 2020, he has co-hosted the podcast Social Discipline with Miguel Prado. Together with Prado, Cécile Malaspina, Sonia de Jager, Martina Raponi and Inigo Wilkins, he is also a member of Noise Research Union (NRU).
Mattin is currently Associate Professor of Contemporary Art at the Tromsø Academy of Arts, UiT – The Arctic University of Norway.
