Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis:

Our kidneys keep our blood clean by filtering out waste products. Kidney function naturally declines with age, but some individuals experience a faster decline. This increases the risk of serious health problems like chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), which can shorten life expectancy. Since it is difficult to predict who will experience a faster decline in kidney function, identifying early warning signs (called biomarkers) is crucial. Biomarkers help detect problems early, allowing for better prevention and treatment.
We followed 1627 healthy middle-aged individuals over 11 years, using a precise method to measure kidney function. During this period, 95 participants developed CKD, and 237 experienced CVD.
Higher levels of some biomarkers we investigated were linked to faster kidney function decline, CKD, and CVD. We hope our findings may help identify people at risk of early kidney function decline in the future.
