Debattmøte om Trumps internasjonale handelskrig og utfordringer Norge står overfor / Debate meeting on Trump's international trade war and the challenges facing Norway

Internasjonalt Seminar er et informasjons- og debattforum i Tromsø, som gjennom foredrag og paneldiskusjoner tar opp nord/sør-problematikk, miljø/klima, fattigdom/utvikling og krig/fred som sentrale tema.

Torsdag 11. september kl. 19:00-21:00, på Tromsø bibliotek og byarkiv, holdes åpningsforedraget i programmet for Internasjonalt Seminar denne høsten.

I samarbeid med Senter for fredsstudier og Handelshøyskolen på UiT, ønsker Internasjonalt Seminar velkommen til et spennende møte om Donald Trumps internasjonale handelskrig.

I en verden preget av eksportbasert økonomisk vekst har høye tollsatser ført til splittelse blant gamle handelsvenner og allierte, og skapt nye vennskap og handelsallianser. Tolltruslene blir brukt med både økonomiske og andre mål for øyet, noe særlig Mexico, Canada og Danmark har fått merke. Går handelsstrategien på akkord med grunnprinsippene i globaliseringens tidsalder?

Trumps handelskrig fører med seg utfordringer og mulige kriser for amerikansk så vel som internasjonal økonomi. Samtidig kan flere spørsmål stilles: Har globalismen nådd et naturlig «endepunkt»? Er vi på vei inn i en ny verdensorden preget av en nedskalert, kanskje mer bærekraftig internasjonal handel som er bedre for miljø og klima?

Ole Gunnar Austvik, professor ved Universitetet i Innlandet, spesialist på politisk økonomi, olje – og gasspolitikk og europeisk integrasjon, skal i dette seminaret gå i dybden på disse temaene. Han skal forklare hva som faktisk menes med begreper som handelskrig, toll, eksport og import, og hvordan alt dette henger sammen. I rollen som moderator for kvelden stiller Espen Sirnes, førsteamanuensis ved Handelshøgskolen på UiT. Sammen skal de forsøke å finne svar på spørsmål som:

• Er det amerikanske århundret over?
• Hvilke konsekvenser får Trumps handelskrig på gamle og nye internasjonale relasjoner?
• Hvilke utfordringer og muligheter er å finne i framtiden, både for det internasjonale samfunnet og for Norge?

Som vanlig på internasjonalt seminar vil det mot slutten åpnes for spørsmål fra publikum.

Internasjonalt seminar har et program med 25-30 åpne møter i året.

Seminaret støttes av Tromsø kommune og koordineres av FN-sambandet Nord og Seksjon for internasjonalt samarbeid (SIS) ved UiT Norges arktiske universitet.

I tillegg støttes seminaret av Tromsøs humanitære organisasjoner, solidaritets- organisasjoner og studentorganisasjoner.

International Seminar is an information and debate forum in Tromsø, which, through lectures and panel discussions, addresses key topics such as North/South issues, environment/climate, poverty/development, and war/peace.

On Thursday, 11th September, from 19:00 to 21:00, at Tromsø Library and City Archives, the opening lecture of this autumn's programme for International Seminar will take place.

In collaboration with the Centre for Peace Studies and the School of Business at UiT, the International Seminar warmly invites you to an engaging meeting on Donald Trump's international trade war

In a world characterised by export-driven economic growth, high tariffs have caused divisions among long-standing trade partners and allies, while fostering new friendships and trade alliances. Tariff threats are being used with both economic and other objectives in mind, something that countries like Mexico, Canada, and Denmark have particularly experienced. Does this trade strategy compromise the fundamental principles of the globalisation era?

Trump's trade war brings challenges and potential crises for both the American and international economies. At the same time, several questions arise: Has globalism reached a natural "end point"? Are we entering a new world order marked by a scaled-down, perhaps more sustainable international trade system that benefits the environment and climate?

Ole Gunnar Austvik, a professor at the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences and a specialist in political economy, oil and gas policy, and European integration, will delve into these topics during this seminar. He will explain the actual meaning of terms like trade war, tariffs, exports, and imports, and how all these elements are interconnected.

The evening’s moderator will be Espen Sirnes, Associate Professor at the School of Business at UiT. Together, they will attempt to answer questions such as:

• Is the American century over?
• What are the consequences of Trump's trade war for old and new international relationships?
• What challenges and opportunities lie ahead for both the international community and Norway?

As is customary at the International Seminar, the session will conclude with an open Q&A session for the audience.

International Seminar hosts a programme of 25-30 open meetings annually.

The seminar is supported by Tromsø Municipality and coordinated by the United Nations Association of Norway (Northern Region) and the Section for International Cooperation (SIS) at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. Additionally, the seminar is supported by Tromsø's humanitarian organisations, solidarity organisations, and student organisations.
