The research group CRAFT and the network ENCODE (both UiT) invite to a screening of Rintaro's animated movie Metropolis (Japan 2001) at Verdensteatret Cinematek on Tuesday September 16 from 18:00.

A story about robots in a futuristic city with an impossibly large central spire, like the ziggurat of an ancient temple. It may seem familiar, but when Osamu Tezuka wrote the manga Metropolis (1949) he claimed to only know of the Fritz Lang film by a single still image. An elaboration of Fritz Lang's vision by one of the greatest cartoonists of all time, the so-called 'godfather of manga', Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis was adapted into an animated feature film by Shigeyuki Hayashi AKA RintaroCRAFT & ENCODE are proud to present this rare anime with the help of Verdensteatret.

Metropolis is praised largely for its visual spectacle, but the plot's exploration of the possibility of machines as beings that can love remains a consistent preoccupation in science fiction. As we become more and more aware of so-called AI in our daily lives and the environmental and economics costs of our reliance on these technologies, Metropolis presents a view of robots guided by Japanese Shinto beliefs in the spirituality of all things, natural and man-made.

We look forward to screening the movie and having a discussion of its themes and how it stands in today's media and tech environment. The Q&A will be led by Gaute Barlindhaug (ENCODE).

The screening of Metropolis (2001) is the 16th in a series of films on critical future visions presented by CRAFT and ENCODE in cooperation with Verdensteatret Cinematek.

Tickets can be bought here or directly at Verdensteatret Cinematek.
