Ski guiding in practice
When we think about ski guides, we imagine them as snow-calculating machines making split-second decisions based on objective cognition assisted by technological tools and instruments. By ethnographically observing guides and their clients skiing in the mountains over three winter seasons, this thesis offers a much deeper insight. Guides rely heavily on their embodied skills that make them able to sense the nervousness in a client’s voice or note subtle changes in the snow surface. They actively engage with their clients and other guides to reach common understandings. Instead of following decision tools, the guides rely on a broad set of routines, that provide stability, while at the same time allowing the guides to continuously adjust to changing situations. Ultimately, this research shows that ski guiding is a more relational, embodied, and fluid process than previously recognized.
