Student housing is managed by Samskipnaden (The Norwegian Arctic Student Welfare Organisation), not by UiT or the Incoming Student Exchange Team.

⚠ Apply as early as possible. As soon as you receive the email titled "Nomination for student exchange", submit your housing application through Samskipnaden. Student housing is limited, and applying early gives you the best chance of receiving a housing offer.

  • 2ïžâƒŁ Check whether you qualify for guaranteed student housing.
  • 3ïžâƒŁ Monitor your application regularly and respond to messages from the Housing Office.
  • 4ïžâƒŁ Wait for a housing decision from Samskipnaden and accept your offer before the deadline.
  • 5ïžâƒŁ If you do not receive a housing offer, start looking for private accommodation as soon as possible.

Apply for housing through Samskipnaden immediately after receiving your nomination email.

  • Select the filter "International student".
  • Enter the correct start date for your exchange period.
  • Confirm that you are an exchange student.

💡 Good to know: If you later decide not to come to UiT, you can cancel your housing reservation through Samskipnaden's housing portal.

📍 Going to Alta, Harstad, Narvik, or Svalbard?
You do not need to select the "International student" filter when applying.

Student housing is owned and managed by the Housing Office at Samskipnaden. UiT or the Incoming Student Exchange Team do not own or manage student housing.

⚠ Housing is limited. Not all incoming exchange students will receive a housing offer.

✅ Students who are guaranteed housing

  • Non-EU/EEA students who need housing documentation as part of their student visa application (Study Permit).
  • Double and joint-degree students who are coming to UiT as part of their degree programme.

⚠ Students who are not guaranteed housing

  • Students with citizenship from EU/EEA and Nordic countries.
  • Housing offers are based on availability and priorities priorities determined by the Housing Office at Samskipnaden, including age-related criteria.

If you do not receive a housing offer, you may remain on the waiting list of the Housing Office at Samskipnaden, but we strongly recommend that you begin searching for private accommodation as soon as possible.

  • Autumn semester (August–December)

📬 Housing results are sent directly by the Housing Office (Samskipnaden). Autumn applicants usually receive housing decisions by mid‑June.

  • It is your responsibility to read and follow all information provided by Samskipnaden.
  • Applications submitted after the deadline may not be considered for reserved student housing.
  • Only single rooms are reserved for incoming exchange students.
  • Apartments are limited and cannot be guaranteed.

👹‍đŸ‘©‍👧‍👩 Coming to Norway with family?

UiT's housing allocation for incoming exchange students applies only to single student rooms. It does not apply to family apartments.

If you plan to move with family members, contact the Housing Department as early as possible and begin exploring alternative housing options.

💰 Security deposits

Most landlords in Norway require tenants to provide a security deposit. The two most common arrangements are:

  • Deposit Account (Depositumskonto) – A deposit account in the tenant's name. This normally requires a Norwegian bank account and a Norwegian national identity number.
  • Deposit Guarantee (Depositumsgaranti) – A guarantee issued by an insurance provider and accepted by the landlord.

Hybel.no, in cooperation with Tryg Forsikring, offers a deposit guarantee scheme. Under this arrangement, tenants pay a non-refundable fee equal to 14% of the total deposit amount, and Tryg acts as the guarantor.

This solution may be particularly useful for international students who cannot open a Norwegian bank account or obtain a Norwegian national identity number before arriving in Norway.

✅ A deposit guarantee can be useful for international students because:

  • You do not need to transfer the full deposit amount.
  • You do not need to open a deposit account.
  • You do not need a Norwegian national identity number.

⚠ Avoid housing scams

When renting accommodation privately, please keep the following in mind:

  • Always ensure that you have a written tenancy agreement.
  • Obtain a receipt or proof of payment for any money transferred.
  • Never pay large sums in cash without a contract and receipt.
  • Verify the landlord's identity and the existence of the property before making any payments.
  • If possible, visit the property in person or verify the address using online maps and other available resources.
  • Be cautious of offers that seem unusually attractive or unrealistically cheap.

đŸš© Common warning signs

  1. The landlord claims to be abroad and asks for payment to a foreign account.
  2. The landlord cannot show you the room or apartment but promises to send the key after you transfer the deposit or payment.
  3. The landlord asks for your credit card details.
  4. The rent is unrealistically low compared to similar rooms or apartments in the same area.
  5. The landlord requests a deposit of more than six months' rent - this is illegal!
  6. The landlord asks you to transfer the deposit to a private account - this is illegal!
  7. You are asked to share sensitive financial information by email, phone, or other communication channels.
  8. Check the room or apartment address using the website Norges Kart.

⚠ Be careful: if a housing offer looks much better or cheaper than similar offers, it may be a scam.
