đ Courses for incoming exchange students at UiT

If you're planning to join us as an exchange student, this page will help you explore the courses available to you.
We update our course catalogues twice a year:
-
15 September – for students starting in the spring semester (January–July)
-
15 March – for students starting in the autumn semester (August–December)
If you're planning to apply for a future semester and the new catalogue isn't out yet, feel free to check the previous semester’s catalogue. Course offerings usually remain quite similar, with only minor changes.
â Key guidelines for course selection
Selecting your course modules is one of the most important steps in your exchange application. Your choices directly impact how quickly your application is processed. Students who skip or misunderstand this section often face delays — so please read carefully!
1. Choose courses related to your degree, subject field and exchange agreement
Most of your courses should be relevant to your current degree, subject field (application alternative) at your home university.
Students nominated under agreements in:
- Social sciences
- Social planning
- Language and culture
Conflictâfree course packages: Course packages are preâdesigned combinations of courses that are put together to avoid timetable overlaps. This means:
- â No timetable clashes
- â No examination conflicts
- â No need to change courses after admission
If you choose courses outside the course packages, there is a high risk of timetable or exam conflicts.
Before making your final selection, please read the course descriptions carefully.
â ïž Please note that some departments at UiT accept exchange students only from their Erasmus+ partner institutions.
2. Combining courses across departments or subject fields
Exchange students may combine courses from different departments, provided that they meet the admission requirements for each individual course. Admission is assessed separately for each course.
Important: Choosing courses across multiple departments or subject areas increases the risk of:
- Timetable clashes
- Examination conflicts
- Delays in application processing
For this reason, course packages or courses within the same subject area are strongly recommended.
â ïž Please note that some departments at UiT accept exchange students only from their Erasmus+ partner institutions.
3. Timetable considerations and flexibility
Course timetables are published after your arrival in Norway, and timetable clashes may therefore be discovered only at that stage.
Information about:
- how to access the timetable, and
- how to change courses
will be sent to you after the admission process is finalised:
- in August (for commencement in the autumn semester)
- in December (for commencement in the spring semester)

TP: Timetable
Add and drop
If you experience timetable clashes, you may need to:
- Drop courses that conflict in the timetable
- Add alternative courses that fit your schedule
This is necessary to ensure that you meet the required number of ECTS per semester, as required by your home university or, for nonâEU/EEA students, by Norwegian immigration authorities.
â We strongly recommend that you remain flexible and include backup course options up to 60 ECTS when applying.
4. Choose courses at one campus only
You cannot combine onâcampus courses from different UiT campuses in the same semester.
Example: You cannot take one course in Tromsø and another in Narvik during the same term.
5. Check admission requirements carefully
Each course has specific admission requirements and prerequisites, which you must meet to be admitted.
â ïž UiT is not responsible if you are rejected from a course because you do not meet the requirements.
6. Plan your credit load
- A fullâtime semester equals 30 ECTS
- You may take fewer credits if this is approved by your home university
- You cannot register for more than 60 ECTS per semester
- If your host department offers course packages, you must choose courses within those packages
đ Visa requirement: Students who require a student visa (nonâEU/EEA) must register for at least 30 ECTS per semester.
7. Understand course levels
UiT course codes consist of three letters followed by four numbers (e.g. BIOâ1001, PSYâ2100, JURâ3001):
- 1000–2000 level: Bachelor’s level
- 3000–4000 level: Master’s level: it normally requires completion of a bachelor’s degree or 180 ECTS
â ïž Exception for geosciences (GEO):
Students from universities with a direct exchange agreement with the Department of Geosciences may be allowed to take master’sâlevel GEO courses (3000–4000) even if they have not yet completed a bachelor’s degree or earned 180 ECTS.
8. Special information for engineering students (campus Narvik)
- Most courses in Narvik are master’s level, except for some courses in electrical engineering
- Courses follow a blockâbased structure:
- Each semester is divided into two 9âweek blocks
- A typical 5 ECTS course is taught over two weeks
To avoid timetable and examination conflicts, students should choose courses:
- Within the same subject area
- With similar course codes
9. Exams and grading
You will find detailed information about:
- examination formats
- grading system at UiT

10. Support for students with disabilities
UiT is committed to inclusive education. Students who need accommodations or academic support due to a disability are encouraged to seek assistance early.
More information is available here:

â Final note
Careful planning, flexibility, and choosing compatible courses will help ensure a smooth exchange experience at UiT.

Tip: After opening the course catalogue, make sure you’ve selected the correct semester (Autumn or Spring) and campus (Alta, Harstad, Narvik, or Tromsø) to see the relevant course offerings.

We ask you to choose one of the course packages listed below, as long as you meet the admission requirements and any prerequisites for the courses. The courses in each package are designed to fit together, so your timetable and exams won’t clash. If you pick courses outside these packages, there’s a good chance you’ll run into scheduling or exam conflicts. Before you decide, please take some time to read the course descriptions carefully.
