đŸ©ș Health & Insurance Essentials for International Students at UiT

Insurance & health matters

Welcome to UiT!

As you prepare for your studies in Norway, it is important to understand how health services and insurance work in Norway. This guide will help you stay safe, healthy, and covered throughout your time at UiT.

UiT The Arctic University of Norway does not provide insurance for accident, liability, health, or travel. That means you must arrange your own insurance before arriving in Norway.

We strongly recommend that your insurance includes:

  • Health coverage (including emergencies)
  • Travel insurance
  • Liability insurance
  • Coverage for emergency return home (e.g. due to serious illness or force majeure)

Nordic Citizens (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden):

  • If you're registered in the Norwegian National Population Register, you're covered under the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme (Folketrygden).

EU/EEA/Swiss Citizens:

  • Bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or private insurance.
  • If you're not eligible for EHIC, you must have private insurance that covers medical expenses in Norway.

Non-EU/EEA Citizens:

  • Staying less than 3 months? Bring insurance from your home country.
  • Staying 3–12 months? Bring insurance from home. You may apply for voluntary membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme, but approval can take up to 6 months.
  • Staying more than 12 months? You’ll automatically be enrolled in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme once you register with the police and receive your Norwegian ID number.

Note:

Membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme (Folketrygden) only covers healthcare within Norway, not during travel or abroad. Dental care and pre-existing conditions are not covered.

  • Tuberculosis (TB): Required for students from high-endemic countries or those who have stayed in such areas for over 3 months. Must be completed within 4 weeks of arrival.
  • After registering your arrival in Norway with the local police, you may receive a letter from the health authorities if you are arriving from an endemic country. Please ensure your name is clearly marked on your post box in Norway, and carefully read the letter you receive. If you need assistance understanding the contents, you are welcome to contact the Student Counselling Centre listed in the section below.
  • MRSA & TB (Clinical Practice Students):
    • MRSA testing must be done before departure and again upon arrival.
    • Students must avoid hospitals after testing until arrival in Norway.
    • A self-declaration form must be submitted before attending clinical classes.

Students are encouraged to review campus safety procedures. Please visit: Emergency info online | UiT

The Student Counselling Centre, administered by the Arctic Student Welfare Organisation, provides a counselling service for Norwegian and international students on campus.

Experienced professionals are available to help students cope with the personal and practical challenges of student life. Studying far from home in a foreign country can be particularly challenging. You will be required to adapt to a new culture and different social behaviours and expectations.
